Residential Design
Live-in writer's retreat from one, based on the spatial qualities of Janet Frame's autobiographical novels.
"[The house] had the appearance of being alive in it's stone and moss. And it was one of my most cherished 'observations' and adventures." Janet Frame, P. 36, To The Is-Land.
This design focussed on looking at the relationship between the body and architecture during the "act of doing [something]". Bodily gestures are translated into architectural elements which come together to provide a space for the "act of doing". The design also relates to specific quotes from Frame's three autobiographies, An Angel at My Table, To The Is-Land and The Envoy from Mirror City, and to the site of it's proposed location - The Kaitorete Spit in Canterbury, New Zealand.
